Claiming Fund Closes; Buys Super Sophie
Calling it a major success, LRF announced the close of its first ever Claiming Fund on April 11, 2010. At the same time, LRF released details of the funds first purchase, Mike Mitchell trained Super Sophie.
“I couldn’t be more excited,” explained LRF Managing Partner Billy Koch. “We raised more than expected and I love the group we put together. Even my younger brother and his friends – the next generation – bought in.”
The fund, set to claim horses over the next six months, will be managed by LRF, 3 time California Owner of the Year Bob Bone, and trainers Mike Mitchell and Mike Puype.
“This is a claiming all-star team,” said LRF Managing Partner Gary Fenton. “It’s like Albert Puljos, Joe Mauer and Derek Jeter all playing for the same team.”
Super Sophie was purchased privately with co-owner Bone for an undisclosed sum. “Although our mandate is to claim horses, our partners have given us the flexibility to ‘claim horses privately’,” said Koch. “Mitchell and Bone approached us about Sophie and what better way to ‘claim’ your first horse than by buying it from the guy who already trains her.”
Look for Sophie to make her first start for LRF in May.
