Originally from Nogales, Arizona, Bob Baffert got started in the Quarter Horse business by grooming and galloping horses for his father. In 1986, he got his first taste of success by campaigning world champion Gold Coast Express.

When he gave up his quarter horse division in the late 80s, even Baffert did not expect what was about to happen. Baffert exploded onto the scene when he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with Silver Charm in 1997. He followed that up with Real Quiet’s victories in the Derby and Preakness the following year. Then, in 2001, Point Given won the Preakness and the Belmont.

In 2002 all he did was win the Derby and Preakness, again, with War Emblem. He has trained seven Eclipse Champions including Chilukki, Point Given, Real Quiet, Silverbulletday, Silver Charm, Vindication and War Emblem. When Behaving Badly won the Rancho Bernardo stakes at Del Mar last year, it was his 75th stakes victory at the seaside track, enabling him to pass Charlie Wittingham’s record of 74.
